Lithography is the printing process that underlies virtually all commercial offset printing. Invented by Alois Senefelder in 1796, lithography revolutionized the reproduction of text and images — and its core principle still drives the high-quality commercial printing produced at VSL Print today.

The fundamental principle of lithography is elegantly simple: oil and water repel each other. Lithographic printing plates are treated so that image areas attract oily ink while non-image areas attract water and repel ink. This chemical distinction, rather than a physical relief or recess, is what separates lithography from other printing methods.

How Modern Offset Lithography Works

In modern commercial printing, lithography is used in the offset process — so called because the ink is offset (transferred) from the plate to a rubber blanket and then onto the substrate, rather than printing directly from plate to paper.

The offset lithography process involves:

  1. Plate creation: Computer-to-plate (CTP) technology exposes the image directly onto an aluminum plate, creating hydrophilic (water-attracting) and oleophilic (ink-attracting) zones.
  2. Inking: Ink rollers apply oil-based ink to the plate; it adheres only to the image areas.
  3. Offsetting: The inked image transfers from the plate to a rubber blanket cylinder.
  4. Impression: The blanket transfers ink to the paper as it passes between the blanket cylinder and the impression cylinder.
  5. Repeat: This cycle repeats thousands of times per hour, one color at a time, building up the final CMYK (or spot color) image.

A Brief History of Lithography

Lithography began as an artistic and commercial revolution. When Alois Senefelder discovered the process in 1796, he was looking for a cheap way to publish his own plays and stumbled onto the principle that a greasy image drawn on limestone would accept ink while the wet, undrawn stone would repel it. Through the nineteenth century, lithography became the dominant method for posters, maps, labels, and fine art prints, prized for its ability to reproduce subtle tones and hand-drawn artwork. The leap to offset lithography came in the early twentieth century, when printers realized that transferring the image to a rubber blanket before the paper produced sharper results and protected the plate. How Halftones Turn Ink Into Photographs

One of lithography's quiet marvels is how it reproduces continuous-tone photographs using only solid ink. The answer is the halftone: the image is broken into a fine grid of dots that vary in size. Large dots packed close together read as dark areas; tiny, widely spaced dots read as light areas; and at normal viewing distance the eye blends them into smooth tones. Full-color images layer four halftone screens — cyan, magenta, yellow, and black — each angled differently to avoid an unwanted moiré pattern, building the complete color picture from four single-color impressions. This dot structure is why offset holds such crisp detail and why fine type and photographs reproduce so faithfully. It is also why registration — keeping those four screens perfectly aligned — is so critical to quality.

The Role of Water in Offset: Ink-Water Balance

The defining technical challenge of lithography is managing the relationship between ink and water, known as the dampening or fountain solution. Because image and non-image areas live on the same flat plane, the press must constantly keep the non-image areas wet enough to repel ink without letting water emulsify into the ink and dull the color. Press operators continuously tune this ink-water balance throughout a run — too little water and ink scums onto open areas; too much and the image goes weak and washed out. This delicate equilibrium is the craft at the heart of offset, and it is why an experienced operator makes a visible difference in the final piece.
