What Foil Stamping Is — and Why It Works
Foil stamping, also called hot foil stamping or foil blocking, is a dry finishing process that uses heat and pressure to transfer a thin layer of metallic or pigment foil onto a printed surface. The process starts with a custom magnesium or copper die that is engraved to match your artwork. The heat activates an adhesive layer on the back of the foil, and the pressure bonds the pigment or metallic layer permanently to the paper while the carrier film peels away. Stock Selection

Best stocks for foil
Heavier cover weights hold foil detail best — we recommend 80lb cover and up, with 100lb–130lb cover and 16–32pt board common for cards and packaging. Uncoated, soft-touch, linen, and dark or saturated stocks are especially striking because the metallic shine reads against a matte field. Coated and varnished surfaces can require an adjusted foil and temperature to bond cleanly.
Artwork for the die
Supply foil elements as 100% solid vector art (PDF, AI, or EPS) on their own clearly labeled layer or spot color. Keep fine lines at roughly 0.5pt or heavier and small type at 6pt and up so detail survives the etch. Avoid gradients, tints, and screens — foil is a solid hit, not a halftone. We convert your labeled foil layer directly into the engraved die.
Trapping & registration
When foil sits next to or over printed ink, we build a small trap so a tight registration shift never shows a white gap. For foil reversed out of a printed area, allow a hairline overlap. If you are unsure, send the print-ready file and our prepress team will set the trapping for you.
