What's the Resolution of Digital Prints? Optimal DPI and Image Size for Quality
Resolution is the single biggest factor in digital print quality. This guide explains DPI, PPI, the 300 dpi rule, and how image size translates to print size for sharp results every time.

Why Resolution Matters in Digital Printing
Resolution is the density of dots or pixels in a printed image. Too low, and the output looks soft, blurry, or pixelated. At the correct resolution, photographic detail is crisp, text is sharp, and gradients are smooth. PPI vs. DPI: Understanding the Terminology
These two terms are often used interchangeably, but they describe different things:
- PPI (pixels per inch) — a measurement of the pixel density in a digital image file. This is the number you control when creating or resizing images in Photoshop.
- DPI (dots per inch) — the density of ink dots the printer places on paper. A high-quality digital press typically prints at 1200–2400 dpi, using clusters of dots to simulate each pixel in the image.
When print professionals say "submit at 300 dpi," they mean the image file should have a pixel density of 300 PPI at its intended print size. The press will then use its own high DPI output to render those pixels faithfully.
The 300 DPI Rule Explained
The human eye cannot reliably resolve details finer than about 300 dots per inch at normal reading distance (12–18 inches). This is why 300 PPI has become the standard for commercial digital printing. Images at 300 PPI produce crisp photographic quality in brochures, catalogs, books, and business cards. The same 300 PPI floor applies to wire-bound books, where readers inspect pages at arm's length or closer.
For items viewed at greater distances — posters, signs, banners — you can often use lower resolution because the viewing distance compensates. A large format banner viewed from 10 feet away can look perfectly sharp at 100–150 PPI because the increased viewing distance reduces the perceivable detail threshold.
How to Calculate the Correct Image Size
The formula is straightforward:
Required pixels = Print size in inches × Required PPI
Examples:
- A 4" × 6" postcard at 300 PPI requires an image of at least 1,200 × 1,800 pixels
- A full-page 8.5" × 11" brochure image at 300 PPI requires 2,550 × 3,300 pixels
- A 24" × 36" poster at 150 PPI (for viewing distance of 3–6 feet) requires 3,600 × 5,400 pixels
If your source image is smaller than these dimensions, you cannot recover detail by increasing PPI in Photoshop — you only stretch existing pixels, which produces blur. The only real solution is to source a higher resolution original.
Common Resolution Mistakes and How to Spot Them
Resampling Up in Photoshop
Increasing PPI in Image Size with "Resample" checked creates new pixels through interpolation — the software guesses what the missing detail should look like. The result is smoother than true pixelation but still lacks sharpness. For critical images, never upsample more than 110–120% of the original.
Placing Web Images in Print Layouts
Images downloaded from websites are typically 72 PPI and only a few hundred pixels wide. At print size they become badly pixelated. Always source images from a stock library (licensed at "print resolution") or from the original high-res camera file.
Placing Images at the Wrong Scale
An image that is 300 PPI at 2" × 2" in Photoshop becomes effectively 150 PPI if you scale it up to 4" × 4" in InDesign. Always check the effective PPI in your layout application's Links panel, not just the native PPI of the image file.
Resolution for Different Digital Print Products
- Business cards, brochures, catalogs: 300 PPI minimum
- Posters (close viewing, under 6 feet): 200–300 PPI
- Trade show graphics, banners (6–15 feet): 100–150 PPI
- Building wraps, large murals (30+ feet): 25–72 PPI at final size
Vector Art: The Resolution-Independent Exception
Not everything in a print file is governed by PPI. Vector artwork — logos, type, line art, and illustrations built from mathematical paths in Illustrator or InDesign — is resolution-independent. A vector logo prints crisply whether it appears on a business card or a 40-foot building wrap, because the press renders it from geometry rather than a fixed grid of pixels. This is exactly why brand logos should always be supplied as vector files, not as low-resolution JPEGs pulled from a website. When raster (pixel-based) and vector elements share a layout, only the raster portions are subject to the 300 PPI rule; your type and logos stay sharp at any size.
File Format and Compression Matter Too
Resolution is only half the quality equation — how an image is saved is the other half. A 300 PPI image saved as a heavily compressed JPEG can still show blocky artifacts and halos around edges, because lossy compression discards data every time the file is saved. For print, favor lossless or lightly compressed formats: TIFF or PSD for photographic images, and high-quality JPEG only when file size demands it. Avoid re-saving a JPEG repeatedly, since each save compounds the degradation. When you export your final layout, a PDF/X preset preserves image quality far better than a screen-optimized "smallest file size" export.
How Bit Depth Affects Smooth Gradients
Beyond pixel count, color bit depth influences how smoothly tones transition. An 8-bit-per-channel image offers 256 levels per color, which is enough for most work but can show visible banding in long, subtle gradients such as a sky or a soft drop shadow. Working in 16-bit during retouching, then converting to 8-bit only for final output, gives the press more tonal information to work with and reduces banding in those delicate areas. This matters most on large solid fields and gentle blends, exactly where the eye is quickest to notice stepping.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I just increase the PPI in Photoshop to fix a small image? Only within narrow limits. Resampling upward invents pixels through interpolation; it smooths but cannot restore real detail. Sourcing a larger original is the only true fix.
Why can a billboard look sharp at such low PPI? Viewing distance. The perceivable detail threshold falls as distance grows, so a sign viewed from 30 feet can be printed at a fraction of the PPI a brochure needs and still appear crisp.
What resolution do I need for a logo? Ideally none in PPI terms — supply the logo as vector art. If you only have a raster version, it should be at least 300 PPI at its largest intended placement size.
Does a higher PPI than 300 make the print sharper? Not meaningfully. Beyond roughly 300 PPI at normal reading distance the eye cannot resolve the extra detail, so files at 600 PPI mainly add size without visible benefit. Hold to 300 PPI for standard print and reserve higher values for unusual, close-inspection work.
Why does my image look fine in the PDF but pixelated in print? A reduced PDF view downsamples the image to screen resolution, hiding problems that reappear at full print size. Always check effective PPI in your layout's Links panel rather than trusting the on-screen preview.
