A catalog is a sales tool that has to survive being handled, mailed, and flipped through dozens of times — so the way it is printed and bound matters as much as the design. At VSL Print we produce catalogs, lookbooks, programs, and annual reports entirely under one roof: prepress, offset and digital printing, finishing, and bindery all happen in the same building. Keeping every step in-house means fewer hand-offs, tighter color control, and turnaround we can actually commit to. Shorter programs and booklets are typically stapled through the spine with saddle stitch binding, the fastest and most economical style we run.
Most catalog projects start with a conversation about three things: page count, run length, and how the piece will be used. A 16-page seasonal lookbook mailed to a few hundred VIP customers is a very different job from a 240-page wholesale catalog shipped to a sales force, and each points toward a different press, paper, and binding. We help you weigh those trade-offs before a single sheet is printed, then preflight your files, proof, print, bind, and finish — with rush options when a deadline is non-negotiable. Thicker catalogs usually call for perfect binding, which gives the spine a flat, printable edge that holds up in the mail.

Specialty finishes are what separate a catalog that gets recycled from one that stays on a desk. Because our finishing department is in-house, we can combine effects — say a soft-touch laminated cover with spot UV over the logo and a foil title — without shipping the job to a third party or adding a week to the schedule. A reliable rule of thumb: heavier interior stock feels more premium but adds weight and cost, which matters when you are mailing thousands of catalogs. Coated sheets reproduce photography with more punch, while uncoated stocks read as warmer and more editorial. For most catalogs we pair a 100lb or heavier cover with 80–100lb text pages, which gives the piece a substantial cover and a comfortable, flippable interior. If you are unsure, we will pull physical samples so you can compare weight, brightness, and finish before committing.

We offer gloss, matte, silk, and uncoated papers in various weights. Cover stocks can be different from interior pages.
Yes, we commonly print heavier cover stock (100lb+) with lighter text pages (80-100lb) for a professional feel.
Supply a print-ready PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4 with all fonts embedded, images at 300 DPI, and artwork built in CMYK rather than RGB. Add 0.125 in (1/8") bleed on every outside edge and keep important text at least 0.25 in inside the trim. For saddle-stitch and perfect-bound jobs, send pages as single reader-spread pages and let us handle imposition. If you only have a native InDesign file, we can package and preflight it for you.
Catalogs print on large parent sheets that fold into signatures, and each folded sheet yields four pages (two per side). Because of that, total page count for saddle-stitch and perfect binding must be divisible by four. If your content lands at an odd number, we can add a blank, an order form, or a notes page to make the math work without disrupting your layout.
It depends on quantity and turnaround. Digital is ideal for short runs, fast proofs, and variable data, with no plate setup. Offset becomes more economical at higher volumes and gives you tighter color control, broader stock options, and the ability to add Pantone spot colors. We run both in-house, so we recommend whichever fits your run length and budget after reviewing your files.
Yes. We are G7-calibrated, which means our presses are calibrated to a shared gray-balance and tonal standard for predictable, repeatable color. For exact brand colors we can print Pantone spot inks on offset jobs, and we are happy to run a hard-copy proof so you can approve color before the full run.
Yes. We can poly-bag, shrink-wrap, kit, and pack catalogs for distribution, and we coordinate direct-mail prep including addressing and sorting. Tell us your drop date and we will build the production schedule around it.
Every job includes a digital proof, and we offer hard-copy and press-matched proofs on request. We recommend a physical proof whenever color accuracy, paper feel, or a specialty finish like foil or spot UV is critical to the project.
