Binding is the last—and most visible—step in book production, so the way the pages are printed determines how well they bind. Most of our books start as press sheets that are folded into signatures: groups of pages (commonly 8, 16, or 32) folded and then gathered in sequence. We score heavier covers before folding so the fold is crisp and the coating doesn't crack along the spine. The folded signatures are collated, jogged square, and either sewn, stapled, or milled and glued depending on the method you choose.

For perfect binding, the spine edge of the gathered book block is ground off and roughened, then PUR or EVA adhesive is applied before the cover is nipped on. PUR (polyurethane reactive) glue is the more durable choice for coated stocks and books that will be opened hard and often; it's what we recommend for catalogs and annual reports that need to survive shipping and shelf life. For hardcover case binding, the book block is usually Smyth-sewn for strength, lined, and then cased into boards that we make in-house and wrap in printed paper, cloth, or leatherette—finished with endsheets, head and tail bands, and an optional ribbon marker.

Page count and opening behavior drive the decision more than anything else. Thin booklets up to about 64 pages stitch fastest and lie flat; once you pass roughly 28 pages with thicker stock, perfect binding gives you a printable, squared-off spine. When a book has to open completely flat—photography portfolios, music scores, cookbooks on a counter—we move to lay-flat adhesive binding or mechanical wire-o and spiral coil, which rotate a full 360 degrees.

Text pages typically run on 70–100 lb uncoated stock for novels, manuals, and reports where readability matters, or 80–100 lb gloss, matte, or silk coated stock when photography and color have to pop. Covers are usually 10–14 pt C2S card for softcover work, with hardcover boards adding noticeable heft and rigidity. We print on offset presses for long runs and digitally for short runs and variable data, and because we're G7-calibrated, color stays consistent whether your book is 100 copies or 10,000—and whether it's reprinted next quarter or next year.

Heavier text stock feels more premium but thickens the spine and raises mailing weight, which matters for direct-mail catalogs and bulk shipments.
