The Main Types of Digital Printing Technology

Electrophotography (Laser/Toner)

Electrophotographic printing — commonly called laser printing at the consumer level — uses an electrostatically charged drum to attract toner particles that are then fused to the substrate under heat and pressure. Commercial-grade electrophotographic presses operate at speeds and quality levels far beyond consumer printers and are used for brochures, books, business cards, and short-to-medium run marketing materials.

Some presses use a liquid electrophotographic (LEP) process with liquid ink rather than dry toner, producing print quality that approaches offset in density and smoothness.

Inkjet

Inkjet printing propels tiny droplets of ink from a printhead onto the substrate. Commercial inkjet presses range from high-speed production units for direct mail and transactional printing to wide-format presses for banners, signage, and large display graphics. Inkjet technology is used in both small-format (sheet-fed) and large-format (wide-format, roll-to-roll) applications.

The quality and speed of commercial inkjet has advanced dramatically in the past decade, making it competitive with offset printing on many products at medium and even large run lengths.

Dye Sublimation

Dye sublimation transfers dye from a carrier film into polyester fabric under heat and pressure. The dye becomes part of the fiber structure rather than sitting on the surface, producing extremely vibrant colors that are washable and highly durable. Used primarily for textile printing: trade show fabric displays, apparel, promotional products, and fabric signage.

Advantages of Digital Printing

No Plates, No Setup Delay

The most significant advantage of digital printing is the elimination of plate-making. A new job can go from approved file to press in minutes rather than hours. This makes same-day and next-day turnaround routinely achievable for standard products.

Cost-Effective Short Runs

Because there is no plate cost, digital printing has no minimum quantity floor. A single business card, a run of 10 brochures, or 50 event programs are all economically feasible in digital printing. This makes it ideal for on-demand printing, test prints, and projects with variable quantities.

Variable Data Printing

Digital printing can change any element — text, image, barcode, QR code — on every single piece without any press adjustments. Personalized direct mail, serialized tickets, name-specific invitations, and unique QR codes per print are all produced digitally. This capability is simply not possible in offset printing.

Consistent Color Over Short Runs

Modern digital presses maintain tight color consistency across a print run. While they may drift slightly over very long runs (an area where offset has an advantage), for typical digital run lengths, color-to-color consistency is excellent.

Disadvantages of Digital Printing

Higher Per-Unit Cost at Large Volumes

Digital printing's cost per unit does not decrease as steeply with volume as offset printing does. For quantities above 1,000–2,000 units of a standard product, offset printing typically becomes more cost-competitive.

Pantone and Specialty Ink Limitations

Substrate Constraints

Some substrates — heavy textured papers, large-format rigid boards, and certain specialty materials — are better suited to offset or large-format production than standard digital presses. The two dominant digital technologies — toner-based electrophotography and liquid inkjet — each have a sweet spot. Toner and liquid-electrophotographic presses excel at sharp text, fine detail, and consistent business-card-to-brochure work on a wide range of coated and uncoated stocks; the image sits crisply on the surface and handles small type beautifully. Production inkjet shines on longer runs, books and direct mail, and large format, where its speed and lower running cost pull ahead. For most short-run marketing collateral the differences are subtle and either platform delivers excellent results; for very long digital runs or oversized work, inkjet's economics usually win. Digital print supports the full range of in-house finishing: trimming and guillotine cutting; scoring and folding for brochures and cards; saddle-stitching and perfect binding for booklets and catalogs; lamination in gloss, matte, or soft-touch; die-cutting for custom shapes; and coatings that add protection and tactile quality.
