Print-Savvy Designers in Manhattan
Our designers do not just make things look good on screen — they understand how ink hits paper. They know which finishes enhance a design, which paper stocks complement a brand, and how to set up files so production runs smooth. Long-run work is typically built for offset lithography, so files are prepared with plate-ready separations from day one.
- CMYK color expertise with Pantone matching
- Proper bleeds, trims, and safe zones on every file
- Typography optimized for print legibility
- Paper stock recommendations for every project
- Files built for offset, digital, and large format
- In-house prepress and preflight checks
- Design-to-press handoff with zero surprises
- Rush design available for tight deadlines

How a Print Design Project Comes Together
Designing for print is a craft of constraints. Unlike a screen, a printed piece cannot be undone once it is on press — so every decision about stock, color, fold, and finish has to be made deliberately, and made early. Here is how we move a project from first conversation to a piece you can hold.
1. Discovery & scope
We start by understanding the job: the audience, the message, the distribution method, and the budget. A direct-mail postcard headed for EDDM routes has different constraints than a perfect-bound annual report left on a boardroom table. We confirm trim size, page count, fold pattern, and binding up front, because those choices drive everything downstream — from how copy is broken across panels to how images bleed off the edge.
2. Concept & layout
We build the layout in Adobe InDesign on a proper grid, with master pages, paragraph and character styles, and a typographic hierarchy that holds up across a full document. Vector logos and illustrations are prepared in Illustrator; photography is retouched and color-corrected in Photoshop at print resolution. You see a concept, give feedback, and we refine — most projects include two to three revision rounds.
3. Substrate & finish selection
Because our designers sit beside the press, stock and finishing are part of the design — not an afterthought. We recommend coated or uncoated text and cover weights, typically from 80# text up to 130# cover, and pair them with finishes that fit the piece: soft-touch or matte lamination, spot UV, foil stamping, embossing, or a French fold. We will tell you when a heavy ink coverage wants a different stock, or when a fold needs a score to keep the cover from cracking.
4. Prepress, proof & press
Every file goes through prepress: conversion to CMYK, separation of any Pantone spot colors, image resolution checks at 300 DPI, font embedding, bleed and trim verification, and a full preflight. As a G7-calibrated shop, we hold predictable, repeatable color from proof to final run. You approve a proof, and the same team that designed the piece runs it on our in-house offset, digital, and large-format equipment.
Specs that shape good print design
Bleed and safe zones. We build files with a standard 0.125" bleed on any element that runs to the edge, and keep critical text and logos at least 0.125" inside the trim so nothing important is lost when the guillotine cuts the stack.
Color management. Screens are RGB and additive; print is CMYK and subtractive. We design in CMYK from the start so the deep blue on your monitor does not arrive muddy, and we use Pantone spot inks where a brand color has to be exact.
Image resolution. Web images at 72 DPI fall apart on paper. We work at 300 DPI at final size, and flag low-resolution assets early so there is time to source or shoot replacements before deadline.
Folds and imposition. A tri-fold has panels of slightly different widths so it tucks cleanly; a saddle-stitched booklet needs page counts in multiples of four. We design with the finished, folded piece in mind, not just flat pages.
Who this is for
We design print collateral for the range of businesses that fill Manhattan: restaurants and hospitality groups that need menus and event stationery, fashion and retail brands producing seasonal lookbooks, nonprofits and cultural institutions printing gala programs and benefit materials, professional-services firms refreshing pitch decks and presentation folders, and real-estate teams producing property brochures and direct mail. Whether you need a single sell sheet on a rush schedule or a 200-page catalog planned weeks out, the design and the printing happen under one roof — so there is no file handoff, no finger-pointing between vendors, and no surprises on press.

Print Design NYC
Print Design in New York City
Print design is the craft of designing for a physical page rather than a screen — choosing type, layout, color, and paper so a piece reads well and feels right in the hand. With years of experience designing for our own presses in New York, VSL Print approaches every layout knowing exactly how it will reproduce in ink, foil, and finishing.
We provide print design across the full range of products we produce: business cards, brochures, catalogs, flyers, postcards, presentation folders, invitations, menus, packaging, and large-format graphics. Whether you need an original design from a blank page or production-ready files built from your existing brand, we work to the exact specifications each product and press requires. Many of those layouts move straight from approval into brochure printing in NYC on our own presses.
Because we design at the company that prints the job, our files are print-ready from the start — correct bleeds, trim, resolution, and color, with foil and die layers built the way production needs them. That means fewer revisions, a smoother order, and a finished piece that matches the proof. It also removes the slow back-and-forth that happens when a separate designer and printer have to reconcile files.
We design for everyone from large brands and agencies to small businesses and individuals planning a single event. A small run of well-designed cards or a one-off invitation gets the same attention as a national catalog, and because we handle printing and finishing in-house, one team owns the project from layout to delivery.
Every project starts with your goal, your audience, and your timeline, and from there we provide as much or as little as you need — full design, production layout, or simply preparing your files for print. Tell us what you are making and request a free quote, and our team will recommend the design approach that fits the project, the budget, and the time you have.
Print design requires specific technical knowledge that digital design does not: CMYK color management, bleed and trim specifications, paper stock selection, binding considerations, and prepress preparation. Our designers specialize in print production, ensuring your design translates perfectly from screen to paper.
Yes. This is the core advantage of working with VSL Print. Our designers work alongside our production team, which means design decisions are informed by print capabilities, and the transition from design to press is seamless with no file handoff issues.
At minimum, provide your content (text, images, logos) and any brand guidelines you have. If you do not have content ready, we can help with copywriting and stock photography. The more direction you provide, the faster we can deliver, but we are comfortable working from rough concepts too.
Our standard design projects include 2-3 rounds of revisions. We present an initial concept, incorporate your feedback, and refine until you are satisfied. Additional revision rounds beyond the scope are billed at an hourly rate communicated upfront.
Absolutely. We design within your brand standards — matching colors (including Pantone), typography, imagery style, and layout conventions. If you have a brand guidelines document, share it at project kickoff and we will follow it precisely.
We work primarily in Adobe InDesign for multi-page layouts, Illustrator for vector graphics and logos, and Photoshop for image editing. Final files are delivered as press-ready PDFs (PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4), and we can also provide native files upon request.
Timeline depends on complexity: single-page pieces move fastest, while multi-page brochures and full catalogs or annual reports take longer. We scope the schedule at kickoff, and rush design is available when deadlines are tight.
Yes. Every design project includes full prepress preparation: color conversion to CMYK, image resolution verification (300 DPI minimum), font embedding, bleed setup, and preflight checks. This ensures your files print correctly the first time.
We design for the full range of stocks we run in-house — coated and uncoated text and cover weights, typically from 80# text through 130# cover, plus specialty stocks. Because design and production share a building, we can match a finish to the piece: soft-touch or matte lamination, spot UV, foil stamping, embossing, debossing, or French folds. We will advise when heavy ink coverage or a tight fold calls for a different stock or an added score.
Monitors display color in RGB, which is additive and built from light, while presses print in CMYK, which is subtractive and built from ink. RGB can show vivid blues and greens that ink simply cannot reproduce. We design in CMYK from the start so what you approve on a proof is what comes off the press, and we use Pantone spot inks when a brand color has to be exact.
Yes. Simple single-sheet pieces like flyers, postcards, and sell sheets can often be designed and printed on a rush schedule when files and content are ready. Multi-page work compresses less easily, but we routinely accelerate brochures and catalogs to meet event and mailing deadlines. Tell us your in-hands date at kickoff and we will build the schedule backward from it.
G7 is a calibration methodology for achieving consistent, predictable gray balance and tone across devices and print runs. As a G7-calibrated shop, we hold color that matches from your proof to the final run, and from one reprint to the next — so a brochure printed today looks like the same brochure printed three months from now.
